Description

Gino Marin Ciriaco is a 42 year old coffee producer from the town of Villa Rica located in the Oxapampa municipality in Pasco, central PerĂº. Gino owns a farm of 13 hectares called Osopen, which means “Hill of Clouds”. This hill is well known in the area, and was given its name due to the specific micro-climate that differentiates it from the surrounding area because of the cold, high-altitude clouds that form over night and last into the early hours
of the morning.

Gino has always been involved in coffee growing from a young age, his father before him was a coffee grower, and inspired him to follow in his footsteps. He decided to study agricultural engineering to understand the industry better and allow his and his family to make a real living by growing coffee. With this knowledge Gino gradually introduced new varieties to the land, replacing the old Catimor with yellow caturra and Geisha. This lot is exclusively Geisha variety, and part of this production was selected to enter the Cup of Excellence in 2020 where Gino placed 7th overall. Gino processes all of his production as washed due to the micro-climate conditions (the rain and slow drying periods would render the production of naturals very difficult to control and therefore very risky). All of the coffee production is carried out in a holistic way with the surrounding native forest by integrating the growing under the shade of the exotic trees that are part of the local canopy.

This particular crop is from the 2021 harvest but when we first sampled this coffee side by side with other high scoring coffees produced in 2022, it still stood out for us. It’s a top scoring cup at 89.5 on the SCA points system, with very high florality, a juicy and syrupy body. We really enjoy this coffee, it’s delicate but has a very nice acidity and is surprisingly moreish for such a floral coffee.
